Incomplete Memberships: Completing a membership

When a membership’s first added, it’ll show as Incomplete. While it’s in that state, it can’t be billed and none of the perks are active.

There are two common reasons for this:

  • The membership type is in a division that needs forms signed, or

  • There’s no payment info on file – like if the membership uses Integrated Billing, but the member hasn’t added their billing details yet.

If it’s waiting on forms to be signed, the membership will look like this:

You can click the Sign & Complete button to get the member to sign their agreements on the spot, or use one of the other options available.

If you’d rather not require signatures, you can turn this off by heading to:
Settings > Membership Types > Categories > Edit the Category > Uncheck "Enable Sign & Complete", then hit Save.

If the membership still needs billing info or a payment before it can be completed, it’ll look like this:

What’s needed to complete a membership depends on how it’s set up to be paid.
You can check this under the Payment and Fees section on the membership type’s page:
Settings > Membership Types > [edit the membership type you wish to view this for] -> Payment and Fees -> then the "Bill Automatically" toggle

If “Bill Automatically” is turned on

This means the membership uses Integrated Billing.

To complete it, the member must be signed up with your billing provider.
When you click [Save & Complete], the system will take you to the member’s Billing tab, where you can set them up.

Depending on your provider, you’ll need either their bank account or card details.

If “Bill Automatically” is turned off

That means the membership is set to be paid in person.
To complete it, you’ll need to record some kind of payment against the first charge.

When you click [Save & Complete], the system will send you to the Point of Sale to take payment.
It doesn’t have to be the full amount — a partial payment will do.

If you don’t want to require payment before a membership becomes active, go to:
Settings > Advanced Configuration > Membership > Require an initial payment and disable that option.
